HK Representatives to Attend U.N. Hearing of Race ConventionA Hong Kong government team will attend a hearing by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the treaty monitoring body for the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, in Geneva on July 31.A government spokesman said Thursday that the six-member team will attend as part of China's delegation. During the hearing, the committee will examine China's report, of which Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR)'s report forms part, together with that of the Macao SAR. The team will answer the Committee's questions on the implementation of the convention in the Hong Kong SAR. The spokesman added that this will be the first occasion on which both SARs have attended a U.N. hearing as part of the same delegation. "The report was written by the Hong Kong government, taking full account of the views expressed by interested parties and members of the public during consultations held between October and December in 1999 before the drafting work began," the spokesman said. Deputy Solicitor General Stephen Wong will lead the team with Principal Assistant Secretary for Home Affairs John Dean as deputy. |
