Statistical Bureau Deputy Optimistic on Economic Growth

State Statistical Bureau deputy director Qiu Xiaohua says the economy can expand at a stable rate in the second half despite global and regional economic woes.

"Our country's economy will continue to grow steadily in the second half of this year despite a slowing world economy and the bearish prospects for regional economies,'' he said.

The economy grew a 7.9 per cent year on year in the first half, bolstered by state investment and reviving consumer spending as export growth slowed due to the global slowdown.

Last month exports fell 0.6 per cent year on year - the first fall in two years, according to report.

Mr Qiu conceded the economy, despite robust domestic demand was not immune to the world's slowing growth.
