Jordan's King Says Palestinian State Prerequisite for Mideast Peace

The Jordanian king has stressed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state remains a prerequisite for peace and stability in the Middle East, the Jordan Times reported on Sunday.

The Palestinian issue is the core of the Mideast conflict and there will be no peace and stability in the region unless the Palestinians fully regain their rights, including the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, Abdullah Bin Hussein said in an interview with the Jordan Television on Saturday.

The semiofficial newspaper published the interview on Sunday.

Abdullah reiterated Jordan's unequivocal support for the Palestinians to gain their freedom and independence.

He renewed a call on the world community, especially the United States, Russia and the European Union to exert greater efforts to end the 10 months of Israeli-Palestinian violence, which has left more than 670 people dead, most of them Palestinians.

"The U.S. role is crucial, and so is the European and Russian role. Efforts should be intensified to revive the peace process, including the Syrian and Lebanese tracks, based on international resolutions," the Jordanian king said.

Jordan, which signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, has been playing an active role in helping advance the Mideast peace process.
