Trade Union Head Commends Model Workers
Wei Jianxing, president of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU), Monday met 150 national model workers in Beidaihe, this well-known holiday resort some 280 km from Beijing.
The model workers, selected from the production, education and research fields for their outstanding achievements, came from 31 provinces, autonomous regions and cities across the country.
"The model workers are the outstanding representatives of the working class and hundreds of millions of working masses in China, " said Wei.
Wei is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee.
He said that model workers are the nation's elite, the country' s backbone and examples for the people. Their loyalty to the Party and the country, and their outstanding achievements in ordinary jobs embody the noble characteristics of the working masses and the spirit of a great era.
Wei expressed the hope the model workers would take the lead in studying the July 1 Speech made by President Jiang Zemin. He said that the speech has not only summarized CPC's glorious history in the past 80 years, but also elaborated the essence of the "three represents'" theory.
He asked the model workers to play the role of being the central force of the working class in deepening the country's economic reform, accelerating social development and maintaining stability.
Zhang Junjiu, vice-president of ACFTU, chaired the meeting, at which representatives of the model workers gave speeches.
