Art Gallery to Honor Renowned Musician

China will establish an art gallery in memory of the famous composer and violinist Ma Sicong ( 1912-1987), who devoted his life to the development of modern Chinese music.

The gallery, under the Guangdong Art Museum, is scheduled to be open to the public on May 7, 2002, the 90th anniversary of his birth.

After studying the violin in France, Ma returned home in 1931 and engaged in the practice and research of playing the violin.

His music works are regarded as having had an important influence on the history of modern Chinese music and are cherished by all people.

Ma has held the posts of professor, president and conductor in many high-level musical institutions in China, including the China Symphony Orchestra and the Central Conservatory of Music, the cradle of many top-class singers, composers, conductors and musical performers.

He died in 1987 in the city of Philadelphia, the United States.

Ma Ruixue, daughter of Ma Sicong, has expressed the desire to donate various legacies of Ma, including violins, pianos, some commodities used during his last days, a calligraphy collection, paintings and some of his manuscripts, to the Guangdong Art Museum.

It is expected that some of the donations will be exhibited at the gallery.
