Deep-sea Fishing Booming in Shenzhen

Deep-sea fishing is playing a more and more important role in booming Shenzhen's fishing industry, according to the Shenzhen Economic Daily.

Compared with the same period last year, the output of marine fishing is reported to have climbed up by 16.1 percent to reach 10, 560 tons in the first six months of this year.

Statistics show that the first half year of 2001 witnessed a 2, 116-ton drop in Shenzhen's output of seawater aquaculture with the total output standing at only 11,882 tons.

Without the increase in deep-sea fishing, it would have been hard for Shenzhen to keep up with last year's output of aquatic products, Wang Yanqing, chief official in charge of Shenzhen's ocean and fishery affairs, was quoted as saying by the paper. Currently, the city has three enterprises engaged in deep-sea fishing.

The city's Deep-sea Fishing Company, established in 1994, now has 24 ships and has caught 148 tons of fish so far this year.

The Haiyuan Company, established in 1999, caught 4,835 tons of fish in the first half of this year. The Haichangshun Company, set up in 2000, has catching capacity of over 10,000 tons of fish annually.

As consumer's taste for seafood shows no sign of decreasing, experts said, deep-sea fishing is a natural and necessary option.

They said, the increasing production costs of ocean fishing have diverted Japan and some developed countries to other sectors with higher profitability, providing a good opportunity for China' s deep-sea fishing industry.
