Cuba Sends a Strong Squad for Beijing Universiade

Cuba will send a 56-member delegation for the 21st World University Games to be held in Beijing, including two newly-crowned world athletics champions and five defending gold medalists.

Osleidys Menendez, winner of the women's javelin, and Yipsi Moreno, titlist in the women's hammer at the recent World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, Canada, will spearhead the star-studded track and field team.

Universiade reigning champions Raul Duany in the men's decathlon, Yuhisleidis Cumba Jay in the women's shot put and Jose Guerra in the men's platform diving will defend their titles.

The Cuban athletes will compete in fencing, diving, judo, track and field and swimming at the Beijing Universiade.

Cuba placed third on the medal table with 12 golds, 3 silvers and 12 bronzes at last Universiade held in Palma, Spain in 1999.
