China Builds Information Safety Base in Southwest

China started construction of an information safety products base in the southwest of the country Friday.

With a total investment of 200 million yuan (24 million U.S. dollars), the base is expected to become an important industrialization base for information security products with an annual production capability of 300,000 units.

The base is located in a high-tech zone of Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

According to the blueprint, the base will become a center of information safety technology, a code chip and integrated circuit research center, and a research and development center of safety software by the year 2005. Five information safety businesses each with an annual sales income of over 100 million yuan are expected to be developed in the base.

Construction is scheduled to be completed in three years.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has approved construction of two bases of this kind so far. The other one is in Shanghai.
