Indonesia's Megawati Set to Tour ASEAN States

Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri is set to make her first visit abroad as leader this week, with a whirlwind tour of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports Monday.

Government officials say her visit is to stress Indonesia's commitment to the regional grouping.

Indonesia is a founding member of ASEAN which was established in the Thai capital, Bangkok in 1967.

Megawati, who was appointed as Indonesia's fifth president on July 23rd to replace the sacked Abdurrahman Wahid, is scheduled to start her tour on August 22nd with a visit to the Philippine capital, Manila.

She is expected to travel on to Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, before returning to Jakarta on August 26th.
