Chinese Women Outshine in Universiade Judo Competition

China stamped its strength in women's judo as Qin Dongya and Yang Sujun triumphed Friday in the under 70kg and 63kg categories respectively.

Qin, who luckily edged out Bosch Edith of the Netherlands by decision in the preliminary rounds, subdued Jacques Catherine of Belgium by ippon in the final to take her first major title.

Liu Yongfu, coach of the Chinese women's judo team, said Qin's win was out of his expectation.

"It proves the enhancement of the level of Chinese judokas." He added.

Howey Kate of Great Britain, silver-medalist of the Sydney Olympics, suffered an early defeat by little-known South Korean Kim Mi Jung.

Inspired by Qin's victory, Yang clinched China's third judo gold after she upset Cuban Hernandez Anaisis, who won a bronze in the 2001 World Judo Championships held in Munich, Germany.

South Korean Lee Bok Hee and Saraeva Anna of Russia shared the bronze medal.

On the men's side, South Korean Kwon Young-Woo won the men's under 81kg gold against Azizov Mehman of Azerbaijan, while Despaigne Yasvani of Cuba pulled off a big upset to take the under 90kg title.

Georgian Zurab Zviadauri, silver winner of the World Judo Championships, lost to Yasvani in the preliminary rounds.

Yasvani, who seemed overjoyed with the victory, described it as a surprise, saying "I just thought to win a medal."
