Chinese Stars Li and Lan Eliminated from Women's 1500m Final

Tuesday saw the biggest upset in the track and field competition as Chinese star Lan Lixin and Li Jingnan were knocked out of the women's 1500m final at the 21st Universiade.

Turkey's Sureyya Ayhan ran a fastest 4 minutes 13.79 seconds to reach the last 12, followed by Ukrainian Nataliya Sydorenko in 4: 14.76. Renata Hoppova of Czech Republic was third in 4:17.45.

Lan, who was caught by the team over the last 250 meters, only finished a distant eighth in 4:19.93 in heat two of the first round.

"I haven't recieved regular training since I came back from the Edmonton World Athletics Championships." said Lan, who also failed to qualify for the last eight of women's 1500m in Edmonton.

"There are some other factors outside the competition with my failure." the 23-year-old Lan noted.

But Lan was reluctant to release any details.

Her teammate Li, who has a personal best of 4:04.84, led from the start but also fell to late charge by others. She finally placed a disappointing seventh in 4:19.13 in heat three.
