Vice-Premier Calls for Improved Party Leadership in SOEs

Chinese vice-premier Wu Bangguo has called for enhanced party construction in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) which he said is critical to the smooth progress of SOE reform and development.

The vice-premier made the comment at a meeting with officials from 12 major SOEs in Shanghai, during a visit to the eastern China city between August 26-28.

He stressed that the Communist Party of China's political leadership in SOEs shall not be weakened, no matter how their assets are restructured, how their ownership changes, or how their decision-making and management mechanisms are reformed.

Wu told the officials that in view of the new situations in domestic and international economies, it is imperative that the competitive edge of SOEs, large SOEs in particular, is sharpened.

He urged the enterprises to press hard with innovations in both technology and management, and create a mechanism that enables them to attract technological, management and sales talent.
