A Basic Information System for Tibet Resources Environment in the Shaping

Under joint support of Ministry of Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and People's Government of Tibet Autonomous Region, Chinese researchers are working assiduously for setting up an information system for Tibet resource environment. Experts say that the system will help lay a good foundation for the construction of a "Digital Tibet".

From the period of "6th Five Year Plan" to the "9th Five Year Plan", China has by and large established an information system for the country's resources environment, and a remote sensing system for monitoring the country's resources environment has lately passed the state appraisal. Along with the establishment of the nation's information system, the setting up of a Tibet information system has been brought onto agenda of the Chinese scientists.

By inputting large number of information, which includes introduction of Tibet, natural resources, environment, urban and regional economies and other data materials, an information system has basically come into being in Tibet.

The system can display Tibet's present situation and processes of development by showing maps, characters, graphs, figures and photos. Land utilization, vegetation growth, soil erosion and other natural environment can be displayed by this system, and entering urban databank, visitors can search for Lhasa, Shigatse and other cities' development.

The information of the system will be updated periodically and it can meet the urgent needs for macro-policy formulation of the Tibet government and researches on related subjects.
