Anti-racism March in S. Africa

Several hundreds of people Friday marched outside the venue of the World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) to drum up support for the fight against racism worldwide.

The march, organized by the South African National Non- Governmental Organizations Coalition, was aimed at urging the United Nations to take a stronger lead in intensifying combat against the racism scourge.

However, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and South African President Thabo Mbeki did not appear at the Speaker's Corner, about 100 meters from the International Convention Center where the third WCAR is being held, to receive a "people's manifesto" from anti-racism marchers.

But, a U.N. official joined the march representing Annan.
