U.S. Makes First Arrest in Terrorist Attacks Probe
The United States made the first arrest Friday in the worldwide investigation of Tuesday's terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
The suspect was arrested after federal authorities found that the person has information highly relevant to the investigation and is a high-flight risk, a government official said.
The U.S. Justice Department said the warrant identified the suspect as a material witness.
The official, cited by U.S. media, did not say where the arrest was made.
It was the first break in the investigation that has spanned the globe. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has received over 36,000 leads and has issued hundreds of subpoenas.
On Friday, the Justice Department released the names of the 19 hijackers involved in the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Defense Department building in Washington.
Many of the 19, believed to have had pilot's training, had lived in Florida. Others were listed as living in New Jersey, California, Massachusetts and Arizona. All had Middle Eastern names.
