Fountains in China's "City of Springs" Spurt Again
Jinan, capital of east China's Shandong Province, known as the "City of Springs", has seen gushes of water coming out of its four famous springs, which went dry two years ago.
The city used to boast more than 160 springs, which have been known for over 2,000 years.
Dry weather and excessive exploitation of underground water have resulted in most of these springs drying up as early as in the 1970s. The four most famous springs stopped flowing in March 1999.
Since early this year, the local government has made efforts to curb residential consumption of underground water, to save the springs.
Scheduled to be completed in 2003, two large reservoirs in the suburbs, will help cut the city's underground water consumption by 80 percent.
