China Uses Methanol for Cleaner Fuel

Methanol will replace gasoline for five models of taxis operating in Datong, north China's Shanxi Province, a move that will cut fuel costs by 25 per cent.

The Yungang Auto Group invented China's first methanol-burning device to be used as a substitute for pollution-causing gasoline.

The device is currently suitable for five types of motor vehicles made in China including Xiali and Jetta. Gas-fueled cars will be remodeled to use methanol, sources said.

Discharge from methanol is composed of water and carbon dioxide, and is much cleaner than gasoline exhaust, according to experts.

Shanxi is the first province in China to develop methanol cars, and plans to have as many as 5,000 on the roads in the next five years.
