Closer Mexico-China Trade Ties Benefit Both: Minister

Mexican Secretary of Economy Luis Ernesto Derbez said here Friday that his country wishes for closer ties of trade and cooperation with China and believes such ties would benefit both countries.

Derbez told Xinhua that the two countries should seek ways to strengthen their trade relations rather than become rivals in competitions.

Closer cooperation between the two countries would help boost bilateral trade, he said, noting that both countries have a competitive edge on manufacturing similar types of products for export.

He said China, a country with a population of over 1.2 billion where per capita income levels are steadily rising, would be a very important potential market for Mexico.

Derbez expressed the hope that China would serve as a channel that offers Mexican products access to other Asian markets. He said Mexico, in return, is ready to facilitate market access for Chinese products in Latin America and Europe.

Derbez attended the 13th Ministerial Meeting of the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum on Wednesday and Thursday.
