Chinese President Jiang Zemin said here Saturday that in hosting meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) China hopes the meetings will further promote APEC cooperation process, enhance APEC members' capability to cope with globalization and the New Economy in the new century and contribute to regional economic cooperation and world economic development.

Jiang made the remark when meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Bin Mohamad, who is here to attend the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting.

Mahathir said that the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting in Shanghai is all the more important under the current world situation. The participating leaders will not only discuss important topics of APEC meetings, but also exchange views on the anti-terrorism issue of common concern. Mahathir briefed Jiang on the Malaysian government's stance on the issue of fighting terrorism.
