Officials Embezzling Unemployment Insurance Fund Face Court Judgment

Three Chinese local officials have been convicted of embezzling a large sum of money from the public unemployment insurance fund and will face court judgment, according to sources.

The officials are Ding Zhiyou, head of the Lubei District of Tangshan, an industrial city in north China's Hebei Province, Li Xiaorui, director of the district's social insurance bureau, and Li Shouliang, director of the district's labor and personnel bureau.

In 1997, the three illegally transferred more than one million yuan (about 120,000 U.S. dollars) of the public unemployment insurance fund to enterprises under the charge of the district government, and then collaborated to embezzle 960,000 yuan by making false accounts.

The three have been expelled from the Communist Party of China and are awaiting sentence, sources say.
