China's International TV Festival Opens

An international television festival of documentaries opened today in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan province.

Some 340 documentaries from 35 countries and regions are competing for the Golden Panda Awards. A committee of 10 experts from such countries as France and the United States will announce the winners of the 14 awards tonight.

The awards include the best long documentaries and the best short documentaries, within the categories of humanities, society, the environment and nature.

The four-day festival has attracted close to 6,000 people from home and abroad, including Suzette Glenadel, Martham Foster and Ivan Hattingh.

Experts said the festival demonstrates the development of China 's television industry.
