Vice-President Hu Conversed with Overseas Chinese Students in UK

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao, coming on a five-nation tour in UK, paid a visit Tuesday morning at the famous London University in UK and had a talk with overseas Chinese students and scholar representatives in the country.

Chinese students and scholars studying in the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine had turned up early in front of the college waiting for Vice-President Hu and greeted him with a warm welcome.

Sir Richard Sykes, Rector of the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, gave an introduction of the College to Vice-President Hu and showed him around the labs of the College.

Hu talked with representatives of Chinese overseas students in UK. Four of them reported their study and working situation to the Vice-president. Hu extended cordial greetings and best wishes to the overseas students on behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the State Council.

Hu said he was gratified with the achievements and success made by the students in their study and career development. He pointed out that the Party and the government have always thought highly of the work of overseas Chinese students and insist on the policy of "support overseas study, encourage home return and free entry and exit". Overseas students are valuable property of the motherland. China will work harder to create a favorable environment and conditions for them and encourage them to return home and give full play to their talents in the motherland. Hu hoped that overseas Chinese students and scholars in UK study harder, forge ahead and make contributions to China's reform and opening, its modernization construction and realization of great prosperity.

Hu also gave an introduction on the situation of the construction within China.

Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine was founded in 1907. It has a student body of over 10,000 and a teaching and research staff of more than 2,900, among whom, 53 are members of UK Royal Society and 54 are UK Royal Academy of Engineering. Eighteen Nobel Prize winners have had the experience of teaching or researching in the College. Presently, it has more than 10 Chinese teachers and 400 Chinese students.
