People's Daily Says Lee Teng-hui Pushing Taiwan Towards Calamity

People's Daily, China's leading newspaper, carries an article on September 14 condemning Lee Teng-hui for pushing Taiwan towards a calamity.

Lee's "two states" statement has been severely criticized but he hasn't repented and has gone even further by putting his " special state-to-state relations" into Kuomintang documents.

The article says that Lee's stubborn attempts to divide China have to be closely monitored. With his support, "Taiwan independence" forces have run rampant in recent years and the " special state-to-state relations" adoption indicates the direction of the Taiwan authorities' policies in the future.

The common goal of the Chinese, including the Taiwanese, is to reunify China and Lee's attempt to divide China is doomed to fail, says the article. Lee has tried to see to it that his policies continue after he steps down off the political stage and his measures have put obstacles in the path of reunification and seriously damaged the interests of Taiwan.

Lee has betrayed Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the Kuomintang, and members of the party. Today, Lee is pushing Taiwan onto a battleground, which is to endanger the economic development of Taiwan.

The people of Taiwan expect a stable and peaceful life, which depends on the healthy development of cross-Straits relations, the article says, expressing the hope that insightful Taiwanese can see through the danger of Lee's splittist policy and prevent the danger.
