China Overwhelms Spirited Nigerians 3-1

Two goals by captain and Asian Player of the Year, SUN Wen, set up China's 3-1 defeat of a spirited Nigeria in its opening preliminary match in Group F of the women's football competitionin in Canberra September 20.


China opened the scoring after 12 minutes when Zhao Lihong received a long ball from defence and chipped over the defender before lobbing her shot into the goal.

In the 57th minute, China doubled their lead when SUN Wen finished off a great passing move that involved Liu Ailing and Liu Ying.

China scored its third goal from a spectacularly taken free kick from Sun Wen who curled her shot into the net after ZHANG Guoying was brought down by Eberechi OPARA (NGR).

Perpetua NKWOCHA (NGR) was rewarded for her hard work when she scored a consolation penalty goal with five minutes remaining after Xie Huilin mistimed her tackle on Ifeanyichukwu CHIEJINE (NGR).
