Juan Antonio Samaranch's Wife Died

Olympic chief Juan Antonio Samaranch, who has devoted two decades to building up the Olympic Games, abandoned the Sydney Games at the weekend just hours after they opened to fly home to his dying wife.

The announcement of Maria Teresa Salisachs's death in Barcelona by Spanish state radio came in the early hours of Sunday morning in Sydney. No Olympic officials were immediately available for comment.

Samaranch, who has been at the helm of the International Olympic Committee for 20 years, flew out of Sydney on Saturday after learning that the condition of his wife, 69, who had been ill for several months, had worsened. His duties at the Games have been taken over by Canada's IOC vice president Dick Pound.
