Mutlu Breaks Snatch Record

Turkish weightlifter Halil Mutlu broke his own world record for the men's 56 kg snatch at the Olympic Games on Saturday.

Mutlu, the defending Olympic champion, lifted 138 kg with his third and final attempt to eclipse his previous world record of 137.5 kg set at the world championships in Athens in November 1999.

Mutlu's first lift of 130 kg was enough in itself to give him the lead at the halfway stage of the competition.

Bulgarian Ivan Ivanov was the only other athlete to equal it but lay in second place due to superior bodyweight.

Mutlu, the smallest man in the competition at 1.50 metres (four feet 11 inches), then lifted 135 kg with his second attempt and 138 kg with his third.

He was due to compete in the clean-and-jerk stage of the competition later.
