US break women's relay world recordJenny Thompson from the United States claimed a record-equalling sixth Olympic gold medal breaking China's six-year-old world record to win the women's 4x100 metres freestyle relay final in the Homebush Bay pool on Saturday.Amy van Dyken, Dara Torres, Courtney Shealy and Thompson romped home in three minutes 36.61 seconds to beat the mark of 3:37.91 set by China at the world championships in Rome on September 7, 1994. Susan O'Neill gave Australia the lead on the first leg but Torres put the Americans in front on the second and they never looked back. The Netherlands were second in 3:39.83 and Sweden third in 3:40.30. Thompson's six golds - all in relays - is matched in women's Olympic swimming only by former East German Kristin Otto, who won six golds at the 1988 Seoul Games. |
