Wang Takes a Second Sydney Games Title

World No. 1 Wang Nan of China has claimed victory over world No. 2 Li Ju, with whom she won the doubles title on Friday.

In a close five game match, WANG came out strong to take the first game 21-12, but LI then won the second game 12-21 after taking the lead midway. Her attacking play forced WANG around the court.

The third game was a showcase for the similar styles of the two players, as forehand topspin shots dominated the lengthy rallies. LI prevailed to take the game 19-21.

The strong counterattack continued with relatively few errors in the forth game, as the play moved further back in the court favouring WANG. She evened the match by winning the game 21-17.

Tension rose in the final game as the gold medal winning doubles pair matched each other point for point, until WANG made a break at 12-12 to secure the gold medal 21-18.
