Xiao is from a family of outstanding divers. He was awarded a bronze medal in the platform at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, but he has since switched to the 3m springboard. He is known for his steady performance, and during the domestic selective trials for the Olympics this year, he finished second (after Xiong Ni) in the 3m springboard. Because of their close resemblance in physique and technical style, he and Xiong Ni have cooperated well in the 3m synchronized diving and achieved outstanding results in competitions both at home and abroad since last year.
