City University of Hong Kong

City University is one of seven Hong Kong universities funded by the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. Our institution was established in 1984 and has grown and developed at a remarkable pace. Our student population is now more than 13,500 full-time equivalent students. We offer more than 90 academic programmes in a wide range of disciplines. More than 800 full-time academic staff are devoted to teaching, basic and applied research, consultancy and other scholarly activities.

The university is committed to the pursuit of academic excellence and service to the community. We aim to become a leading university in the Asia-Pacific region and to prepare students for the challenges of the new millennium. We are committed to enhancing the quality of teaching and research and to widening our support for teachers and students. We are dedicated to helping our students become well-rounded professionals with the analytical, problem-solving and communication skills required to meet the needs and challenges of the workplace and society. Towards this goal, in September 1997 we introduced a credit unit system which increases flexibility in students' choices across disciplines and provides more opportunities for a broad-based education.

The university has a strong research ethos with faculty undertaking both basic and applied research dedicated to the advancement of knowledge to the benefit of society and the region. To keep abreast of social and technological developments, as well as to stimulate new ideas and innovations, one Research Institute and 16 Research Centres have been set up at the university and faculty levels. Four Applied Strategic Development Centres were established in February 2000 to promote and stimulate applied R&D initiatives and strengthen our collaboration with external organizations. Together, these centres are expected to develop into areas of excellence and provide a sound training environment for more than 500 research students enrolled in MPhil and PhD programmes.

Outreach to the local and international community is also a prime task of CityU. We foster close relationships with industry and commerce and other sectors of the local community. We encourage student and staff exchanges to create a multi-cultural environment on campus, to increase students' exposure to other cultures and enrich their learning experience. The Academic Exchange Building, opened in July 1997, helps facilitate this goal by providing accommodation for visiting scholars and exchange students and participants in conferences and other activities.

The university offers a wide range of learning opportunities from associate and bachelor's degrees to postgraduate studies, in-service training and short courses of various kinds. The programmes are offered by the Faculties of Business, Science and Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Creative Media, the School of Law, and the College of Higher Vocational Studies. Bachelor's degree and postgraduate programmes are organized under the faculties and schools. The college and schools run associate degree programmes.

In addition, the university has a School of Graduate Studies whose objective is to strengthen the operation and development of postgraduate programmes and to foster an appropriate ambiance for graduate studies.

The School of Continuing and Professional Education helps fulfil the university's role as a centre for lifelong education by providing educational opportunities for the community through continuing education programmes and self-financed university award-bearing programmes.
