Fudan University

Fudan University , originally called Fudan Public School ,was founded in 1905. Fudan,meaning literally in Chinese " a new morning " , was named after a quotation from the major historical accounts section of Confucian classic Shang Shu (The Classic of history ) compiled about two thousand years ago . The quotation reads:

"Brilliant are the sunlight and the moonlight ; Again the morning glory after a night." As a well-liked aphorism, the quotation means making unremitting efforts to improve oneself.

In 1917 , Fudan became a private university composed of various Departments in the humanities , natural sciences and business as well as a preparatory school and a middle school . Fudan was moved to the inland city of Bei Pei , Chongqing , after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937.In 1941,Fudan became a national University and five years later, it was moved back to the present campus in Jiangwan , Shanghai , the original site of the university . In 1952, the nation-wide adjustment of departments and schools among institutions of higher learning made Fudan a comprehensive university consisting of programs in liberal arts, social sciences , natural sciences , technical sciences and management sciences.

Over 90 years old now . Fudan University has established its prestige both at home and abroad ,with education , research , and service to the nation's economic development as its primary goals . Since May 1994 , the University has been receiving full support from the Shanghai Municipality while still remaining under direct jurisdiction of the State Ministry of Education (formerly State Education Commission).It has been selected by Project 211 to be one of the few universities for investment priority in the 21st century . As Shanghai Major Kuangdi Xu put it , one of the achievements in China's higher education is the rising of Fudan University.

Organization of the University

The University's chief executive officer is the president . The incumbent President is Professor Shenghong Wang . There are five vice presidents who manage the University's major administractive divisions. The deans of the schools report to the president, and the chairs of the departments reports to the dean.

The University's Board of Trustees is composed of 58 distinguished scientists, educators, and business leaders, plus 5 Advisors and 10 Honorary Tustees, with Nobel Prize winner T. D. Lee as its Honorary Chair.

The Fudan Public Affairs and Development Committee, with President Fujia Yang as its Chairperson, aims at raising funds from those who are keen on promoting education, as well as establishing such lectureship, W. Z. Yang Lectureship, Matsushita lectureship to invite renowned persons to lecture at Fudan University.

Schools and Departments

Fudan University has great research and teaching strength. It is composed of seven schools: the Schools of humanities, Journalism, Law, Economics, Management, Technology and Engineering, Life Science. Preparation for the establishment of the Schools of Sciences and Medicine is under way. Spread among all the seven schools are 35 departments, 67 undergraduate programs, 109 Master programs, 50 doctoral programs, 9 post doctoral mobile stations, 34 research institutes, 42 interdisciplinary research centers. Besides, it includes the School of Adult Education, the School of International Cultural Exchange, and the Graduate School. Schools are 34 departments , 48 undergraduate programs. 100 masters programs, 50 doctoral programs . 9 post-doctoral mobile stations . 35 research institutes , 44 interdisciplinary research centers. Besides , it also includes the School of Adult Education , the School of International Cultural Exchange , and the Graduate School.

Research

Fudan University currently has 81 laboratories . Among them ,the Laboratory for Modification of Materials by Electron, Ion , and Laser Beams, Laboratory for Applied Surface Physics , Laboratory for Accelerator-based Atomic and Nuclear Physics,Laboratory for Physical Chemistry , Laboratory for Specialized Integrated Circuit Systems, Laboratory for Genetic Engineering , Laboratory for Basic mathematics, Laboratory for Nonlinear Mathematical Models and Methodology , Laboratory for Synthetic Polymer Engineering are State-level key laboratories.

Fudan University has a total of 40 research centers and institutes , such as Fudan Development institute which is a think tank for the government , Centers for American , Japanese and Korean Studies, Nordic Center, Center of Analytical testing, National Microanalysis Center of microelectrolic Materials and Devices,Genetics and Medical Science Research Center ,Center for Environmental studies , Center for women Studies , Testing Center of China's Computer Software Certificate, Cambridge Information Technology Training Center , State Education Ministry Fudan Humanities Data Bank.

Faculty and Students

1. There are 4,673 faculty and staff members at Fudan University , 1,888 of whom are women over 1,700 are involved in teaching and research . Among them are 1,049 professors and associate professors ( 9 professors are academicians of the Academia Sinica), 3 distinguished professors , 14 chair professors ,and 268 doctoral advisors. 2. Athletics and Recreation

Fudan University offers opportunity for sports instruction and participation at all levels. Two years' physical education is required for all undergraduate students. Both Fudan's men and women volleyball teams are among the nation's top-8 teams. Fudan students also excel in track and field events, swimming, chess, gymnastics, basketball, football and range shooting.

Association of Fudan Alumni and Alumnae

Over 40 Chapters of Fudan Alumni and Alumnae Association have been established in and out of China. There is an Alumni Liaison Office at Fudan University that edits The University Annals and communicates with the alumni and alumnae, invites them back for a reunion on May 27 every year to attend the University anniversary celebrations. Collaborations

Fudan university has established exchange relations with 82 colleges and universities in 13 countries and regions. Every year the University invites over 20 long-term experts to lecture or do research work at Fudan, and has invited around 300 foreign experts on short-term basis. 128 world-renowned scholars have been conferred upon the titles of Honorary Professor, 1,400 faculty members have been sent abroad to pursue further study or research, 586 students have been sent abroad to study for Master's or Doctor's Degree. Since 1985, Fudan University has organized about 100 international or bilateral symposiums and conferences. Besides, world famous statesmen such as Us President Ronald Regan, the late French President V. Giscard d'Estaing, the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin, former Norwegian Prime Minister Mrs. Bruntland, former US Secretary of State Warren Christopher have delivered speech at Fudan University.
