Jinan University

The predecessor of Jinan University is the Jinan Academy founded in 1906 in Nanking (now Nanjing). It was the first school for overseas Chinese established by the State. In 1918, it was renamed "National Jinan Academy" and was incorporated into Shanghai Commercial University in 1921 with Southeast University. In 1923, the Jinan Academy moved to Zhenru, Shanghai.

Due to the increasing educational needs of the overseas Chinese and youth from Hong Kong and Macao, Jinan University re-established in Guangzhou in 1958 with the approval from the State Council. In 1984, the University was put under the administration of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council.

Jinan University has a well-established reputation as the "Paramount Academy for Overseas Chinese".

As early as when it was first established, it has already set the motto of "loyalty, trustworthiness, sincerity, cautiousness", and cultivated personnel with both the highlights of traditional Chinese virtue and culture and advanced modern science.

The University incorporates 10 colleges: College of Liberal Arts, College of Science and Engineering, College of Economics, College of Management, Medical College, College of Life Science, College of Chinese Language and Culture, CTS Tourism College, College of Education and Zhuhai College. There are 26 departments, 34 disciplines that confer bachelor degree, 12 disciplines that confer doctorate degree, and 59 confer master degree. A post-doctorate mobile station on applied economic is also set up in Jinan University. Jinan University is one of the pilot universities that offer MBA courses. Its Chinese Language and Literature Departments is a National Base to train personnel for Liberal Arts Foundation Courses and Scientific Research. Its Chinese Language and Culture College is an accredited institution that could hold HSK (TOCFL) examination as well as one of the three institutions in the country that are qualified to hold advanced level examination.

The University commands a large number of advanced education and scientific research facilities including computer center, audio-visual education center, experimental technology center, language laboratories, and a batch of other facilities on science, engineering and medicine. There are totally 56 laboratories in the University including an experiment center with loan from the World Bank and the Provincial Modern Electronic Technology Laboratory invested by the High Education Department of Guangdong Province.In December 1995, the campus network and Internet were successfully constructed. Its library covers an area of 17,000 square meters, housing 1.48 million volumes of books.

Now there are 38 scientific research institutes in the University, including Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Institute of Overseas and Ethnic Chinese Studies, Institute on the Study of Economics of the Special Economic Zones, Hong Kong and Macao, Institute on Ancient Books and Documents Studies, Biomedical Engineering Institute, Biological Engineering Institute, Reproduction and Immunology Study Center, Hydrobiology Study Center, Applied Mechanics Institute, Industrial Economy Institute.

The University is actively engaged in international academic exchange. So far, exchange relationships have been established with 31 high education institutions and cultural, medical organizaitons in U.S., the U.K., Germany, Portugal, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Australia, South Korea, Brasil, Peru, Hong Kong and Macao. The University has liaison offices in Hong Kong and Macao.
