NanKai University

Nankai University, is located in the city of Tianjin , 130 kilometers away from Beijing, one of the four municipalities directly under the central government. Nankai , a key comprehensive university directly under the State Education Commission , is the Alma Mater of the respected and beloved Premier Zhou Enlai.

From December of 1994 on, it has been constructed jointly by the Municipal Government of Tianjin and the State Education Commission. The president is Prof. Hou Zixin. The University , with a history of nearly 80 years, grew out of Nankai School which was founded in 1904 by the famous educators Zhang Boling and Yan Xiu.

In 1919, the School changed into Private Nankai University offering studies in three areas: liberal arts, sciences and business. During the Anti-Japanese War (1937-1945), the university merged with Peking University and Qinghua University into the National Southwest Associated University in Kunming, Yunnan Province. In 1946, the University returned to Tianjin and developed into National Nankai University. Over the past 80 years, guided by the Motto Dedication to the Public Interests, Acquisition of All-round Capability; Aspiration for Progress, with Each Passing Day? the university has brought up thousands of talents for the country. The late Premier Zou Enlai was among the first batch of the undergraduates; the would-renowned mathematician Prof. Chen Xingshen, physicist Wu Dayou and the prominent late author Cao Yu, etc. were all brilliant graduates of Nankai University. Nankai University is a multi-disciplinary comprehensive university of social sciences, natural sciences, technological sciences, management science, life sciences, medical science and arts, etc.

The university consists of 14 specialized schools, including College of Economics, College of International Business, College of Law and Political Science, College of Humanities, College of Chinese Language and Culture, College of Foreign Languages, College of Chemistry, College of Mathematical Science, College of Life Sciences, College of Medicine, College Information Science and Technology, College of Education of Marxist- Leninist Theories, College of Physical Science and College of Environmental Science and Engineering.

The University also has Graduate School, College of Adult Education, Institute of Economics and Social Development Studies. There are 43 departments, 65 research institutes and centers and 11 national key programs. The University is entitled to confer Master's degrees in 72 programs and doctoral degrees in 36 programs. Besides, it has set up 6 post-doctoral programs. The departments of Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, History , Chinese Language and Literature, Philosophy, etc. are designated by the State Education Commission as National Bases for Research and Personnel Training of Basic Disciplines.

At present, the University has 4,800 faculty members, among whom are 392 professors , 755 associate professors, 170 PHD supervisors, 7 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. The student enrollment is 17,000, including 45 post-doctoral students , 647 doctoral students,1,819 masters and students, 7,968 undergraduates and 640 international students. Nankai University has a total area 2,056 mu, of which 580,000 square meters are the floorage. The University has 6 National Key Laboratories and Open Laboratories, one National Engineering Research Center. The University Library has a collection of 2,400,000 books. The University has established cooperative and exchange relationship with over 100 universities and international academic institutions in nearly 20 countries and districts. Nankai University gained , among the first group of Chinese Universities, the competitive entry into the national " 211 project" .
