Shanghai Jiao Tong University formerly the Nang Yang Public School was founded in 1896 by Mr. SHENG Xuanhuai. It is one of the oldest universities of science and engineering in China. Over the past hundred years, SJTU has educated a large numbers of talented people, including a group of outstanding social activists, well-known scientists, engineers, specialists and professors. SJTU has made significant contributions to the revitalization of nation, to the development of science and technology, and to well-being of mankind. Among the famous and outstanding alumni are JIANG Zemin, the Secretary General of CPC and the President of the People's Republic of China, and WANG Daohan, ZOU Taofen, LU Dingyi, MAO Yisheng, QIAN Xuesen, CAI Er, WANG An, etc. Faced
with the endless challenges from today's rapidly progressive science
and technology, SJTU is aiming at the world level, serving the development
of national economy, emphasizing the advanced sciences, reforming
traditional courses, strengthening centralized unification, promoting
crisscrossed structure, stabilizing the foundation, speeding up the
development, building the staircase-like course disciplines, and at
the same time reconstructing the scientific management system. The
university is to develop a relatively comprehensive and coordinated
disciplinary system focusing on engineering, science and management
system, and also the development of humanities and social sciences.
In past few years, a number of new courses and disciplines have been
opened in the university, such as Real Estate and Property Management,
Human Resources Management, Communication and Transportation

(International
shipping), Industrial Engineering, Radio, Television and Journalism.
A group of disciplines in SJTU, including Communication and Electronic
Systems, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering and Hydrodynamics,
Automatic Control, Composite Materials, and Metal Forming, have been
closed to the advanced world level. A number of new specialties and
disciplines, such as large integrated circuits, computer technology,
optical fiber technology and system engineering, enjoy high status
in related circles in China. With the development of Pudong New Zone
and with the unfolding of the magnificent blueprint of the future
Shanghai as a world economic, trade and financial center, SJTU has
established a number of institutes which are closely related to the
key industries of Shanghai, including the Institute of Automobile
Science and Engineering, the School of Computer Science and Technology,
the Institute of Materials and Chemical Engineering, and the Institute
of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Today SJTU has 16 schools: the
schools of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Power and Energy
Resources Engineering, Electronics and Information Technology, Electric
Power Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,
Sciences, Life Science and Technology, Humanities and Social Science,
Civil Engineering and Mechanics, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering,
Aetna school of Management , Foreign Languages, Agriculture, Environmental
Science and Engineering and Pharmaceutics and 50 department including
Department of Plastic Technology and the Department of Physical Education
and 80 institutes. In addition, SJTU has also set up the Graduate
Schools and Schools for Continuing Education. Up till now SJTU has
74 Masters degree programs, 42 Ph.D programs and 8 national key disciplines
and 5 national key laboratories and national engineering research
centers. ˇˇ 
Today
there are 18,000 students in SJTU, including 14,000 undergraduates
and 4000 postgraduates and Ph. D. students. 4,000 continuing students
and over 290 foreign students. The centennial Jiao Tong University
has inherited its old traditionˇ°high starting points, solid foundation,
strict requirements and extensive practiceˇ±, which has cultivated
one group of qualified students after another. Today the old tradition
is endowed with new content and has become the fine style of learning
of Jiao Tong students. With such tradition SJTU is training students
into excellent qualified talents with solid and broad theoretical
foundation, complex knowledge structure, international communicative
ability and comprehensive development in morality, intelligence and
physical fitness. Students from SJTU have achieved top prizes in various
competitions, such as the International Mathematical Contest in Modeling
and Electronics Design Contest. Teachers form SJTU have won a number
of top prizes in the national Award of outstanding achievements in
Education for their teaching, research and textbooks compiled. ˇˇ
