Geography
Dunhuang,
the hometown of flying apsarase, is one of the brilliant pearls
of the world treasure house. It lies in the western end of Hexi
Corridor at 40' 10'N and 92'48'E in Gansu Province, northwest of
China. It is bordered by Subei Mongolian County and Ahsai kazakh
Autonomous County to the south, Anxi county to the northeast and
Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to the northwest. It's a basin
surrounded by the vast expanse of gobi desert and rolling high mountains.
It has an area of 31,200-sq. km., of which the oasis area covers
4.5 percent. The average elevation is about 1,100 meters and mean
temperature of 9.3¡æ.
Due to the dry weather here, most of the relics of Dunhuang maintain
well reserved and we can still clearly see some of the murals, paintings
and documents today.
