Lu Jiaxi, Vice-Chairman of CPPCC Ninth National
Committee
A native of
Tainan, Taiwan, Lu was born in 1915; member of Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic
Party and Communist Party of China; holds Ph. D from London University; has been
academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
From 1937 to
1939, studied for Ph.D. in Department of Chemistry at London University; in 1939, went to
study at California Institute of Technology under two-time Nobel laureate Linus Pauling
and then stayed there for two and a half more years doing research on structural chemistry
before his return to China in winter of 1945.
From 1960 to
1981, worked as professor and dean of Chemistry Department at Xiamen University, vice
president of Fuzhou University and concurrently director of Fujian Institute of Research
on Structure Matter under CAS and vice-chairman of CPPCC Fujian Provincial Committee and
vice-chairman of Fujian Provincial People's Congress.
From 1981 to
1988, served as CAS president, executive chairman of Presidium of CAS General Assembly,
vice-chairman of Central Committee of China Peasants and Workers Democratic Party, and
academician of Royal Academy of Science of Belgium.
From 1988,
served as special advisor for CAS.
Was elected
vice-chairman of Standing Committee of 8th National People's Congress in March 1993.
Was also a
deputy to 3r, 5th NPC, member of Standing Committee of 6th CPPCC National Committee and
vice-chairman of 7th CPPCC National Committee.
