born October, 1912; a native of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province; member of China Democratic League
(CDL); graduated from University of Toronto in Canada with a doctorate; professor and
academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Worked at
California Institute of Technology, 1942-1946; returned to China in 1946 and served as
professor at Qinghua, Beijing and Yanjing Universities, 1946-1948.
Worked as
professor and vice-president of Qinghua University, deputy secretary-general of All-China
Youth Federation, departmental member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Standing
Committee member of CDL Central Committee, 1949-1983; served as president of Shanghai
Polytechnical University and head of Shanghai Applied Mathematics and Mechanics Institute,
1983-1994.
Served as
member of Drafting Committee of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Basic Law
and vice-chairman of Macao SAR Basic Law Drafting Committee, 1987-1994.
Serving as
vice-chairman of CPPCC National Committee, vice-chairman of CDL Central Committee,
executive president of China Council for Promotion of Peaceful Reunification, president of
China Overseas Exchanges Association and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences since
1987; honorary chairman of CDL Central Committee and president of Shanghai University
since 1994.
