Xu Jialu, Vice-Chairman of NPC Standing Committee

Following is a biographical sketch of Xu Jialu:

Xu, male, of Han Nationality, born in June 1937, native of Huai'an, Jiangsu Province, member of China Association for Promoting Democracy (CAPD), graduated from Department of Chinese Language of Beijing Teachers University in 1959.

Served as lecturer, associate professor, professor, deputy department dean, department dean and director of teaching research office of Chinese Language Department of Beijing Normal University, 1959-87; vice-president of Beijing Teachers University, vice-chairman of Beijing Municipal Committee of People's Political Consultative Conference, and Standing Committee member and vice-chairman of CAPD Central Committee, 1987-94; director of State Language Work Committee, 1994-97; chairman of CAPD Central Committee since 1997 and director of the State Language Work Committee.

He was elected a deputy to Seventh and Eighth National People's Congress (NPC), member of NPC Standing Committee, and member of the NPC Education, Science, Culture and Public Health Committee.
