  • NPC's Annual Meeting concluded (March 15)

2000032001.jpg (11173 bytes)At the closing plenary meeting, nearly 2,800 deputies endorsed Premier Zhu Rongji's government work report, which pledges rapid economic growth and an intensified crackdown on corruption.
They also approved resolutions for the validation of six reports presented at the previous plenary sessions, and the proposed Legislation Law.
They say these resolutions and the new law reflect the fundamental interests and the will and aspirations of the Chinese people.
Deputy Xu Junru from east Jiangxi Province commented that the targets put forward by Premier Zhu are realistic and practical.
Xu Junru says deputies who work at the grassroots like himself are greatly encouraged by the blueprint outlined in Premier Zhu's government report. They are especially happy to learn that concrete measures will be taken to increase people's incomes and improve their living standards.
He says another important issue which is closely related to people's daily life is the anti-corruption campaign.
At the closing plenary session of the just concluded NPC annual meeting, about one fourth of the deputies either voted against the two reports of the People's Supreme Court and the Supreme Procurate, or abstained.
This indicates that stricter measures should be imposed to tighten the legal and supervision work in this regard.
His remarks were echoed by deputy Shang Xiuyun from Beijing. The judicial officer urged officials at all levels to carry out their duties as civil servants.
Deputy Shang Xiuyun says the anti-corruption campaign is the major focus of the public. If government officials at all levels can serve the people wholeheartedly, it would improve government efficiency and push forward the anti-corruption drive so as to ensure a better life for the people.
To achieve these goals, Deputy Jin Lanying from east Shangdong Province stresses the urgent need to build up a complete legal system.
She says it is of great importance to build up a socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics to cope with the country's fast growing economy. It is therefore very important to bring the long-awaited Legislation Law into being.
She believes that only a complete legal system can ensure the country's sustainable development.
The Year 2000 marks the turn of the century. NPC deputies look forward to a bright future in this century.
