Following is a biographic sketch of Wu Yi, who was nominated as state councillor by Premier Zhu Rongji and approved by the Ninth National People's Congress at its First Session.

Wu, female, born 1938, native of Wuhan, Hubei Province, joined the Party 1962, graduated from Beijing Petroleum College, senior engineer.

Worked as technician at Lanzhou Oil Refinery in northwest China's Gansu Province, 1962-65, technician in the Technology Department of the Ministry of Petroleum Industry, 1965-67; the technology section chief, deputy chief engineer and deputy director of the Beijing Dongfanghong Refinery, 1967-83; deputy manager and Party secretary of the Yanshan Petrochemical Corporation, 1983-88.

Served as deputy mayor of Beijing, 1988-91; vice-minister and deputy secretary the Party Group of the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relatgions and Trade (Mofert), 1991-93; minister and secretary of the Party Group of Mofert since 1993, and alternate member of Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee since 1997.

Served as alternate member of the 13th CPC Central Committee, member of the 14th and 15th CPC Central Committee.
