BEIJING, Oct. 8 -- President Xi Jinping said Wednesday the sweeping "mass line" campaign has played an important role in the Communist Party of China's (CPC's) drive to tighten Party discipline.

The significance of the this campaign would manifest itself as time goes by, said Xi when attending a nationwide teleconference marking the end of a sweeping mass-line campaign.

Party and state leaders Li Keqiang, Zhang Dejiang, Yu Zhengsheng, Wang Qishan and Zhang Gaoli were present at the event, which was presided over by Liu Yunshan.

"Mass line" refers to a guideline under which CPC officials and members are required to prioritize the interests of the people and persist in exercising power for them.

Based on arrangements made at the 18th National Congress of the CPC in November 2012, the campaign was scheduled from June 2013 to September 2014, with an aim of cultivating closer ties with the people.

As promised by the CPC's leadership, the campaign acts as a "thorough cleanup" of undesirable work styles such as formalism, bureaucratism, hedonism and extravagance. Officials are required to reflect on their own practices and correct any misbehavior.
