Xu delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, saying that since the Chinese and French governments started their scientific and technological cooperation over past two decades, they have conducted friendly, mutually beneficial and practical cooperative relations.

They have scored satisfactory results in agriculture, biology, medicine, environmental protection, materials science, information technology and geology, noted Xu, adding that there are vast potentials for bilateral cooperation in the new- and high-tech field.

Huwart noted that China's accession to the World Trade Organization has provided France with new prospects, and France will strengthen its trade with China and increase its businesses in China.

After the opening ceremony, He Luli, Xu Guanhua and Huwart attended a signing ceremony for the Spot 5 Data Reception and Distribution Agreement between the Spot Image Company of France and the China Remote Sensing Ground Station under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Spot 5, a high-definition French earth resources monitoring satellite, will be launched in April 2002, and China, by signing this agreement, will be the first country ready to receive data from the satellite.

It is learned that Spot 5 will provide important space remote sensing information for environmental and dynamic earth resource monitoring in China.
