China to Play 2002 FIFA World Cup in ROK

The Chinese team will play its 1st-phase group matches for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan(tm) in the Republic of Korea, the world soccer governing body FIFA announced in Busan of ROK on November 28.

China to play 2002 World Cup in ROK

The Chinese team will play its 1st-phase group matches for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan(tm) in the Republic of Korea, the world soccer governing body FIFA announced in Busan of ROK on November 28.

The Organizing Committee for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan(tm) met in Busan on November 28 for making final draw and final decisions regarding the procedure and the seeded teams.

Both ROK and Japan agreed

In view of geographical proximity, economy and other factors, both ROK Football Association and Japan Football Association agreed to arrange the Chinese team to play in ROK and this as was reported, according with ROK"s aspiration, had won FIFA's approval.

According with ROK"s aspiration

Chairman of the ROK Organizing Committee for the 2002 FIFA World Cup had ever said that they would strive to make China play in ROK at Wednesday's meeting. According to concerned ROK department, when ROK's hope should come true, at least 60,000 Chinese fans would fly into ROK and these would undoubtedly bring great economic benefits to that country.

Final Draw procedure
Various conditions apply

Meeting on 28 November in Busan, the Organising Committee for the 2002 FIFA World Cup decided on the procedure according to which the Final Draw on 1 December will be done.

Geographical condition

A: According to FIFA��s principle, teams from the same confederation shall not be placed in the same group (A �C H) as far as possible. The only exception to this rule is that a maximum of 2 teams from UEFA may be drawn into the same group, due to the higher number of teams from Europe.

B: The co-hosting situation (groups A to D in Korea, groups E to H in Japan) will be taken into account when placing the teams into the respective groups by ensuring that there is a balance of each confederations' teams in Korea and Japan.
