The Chinese capital Beijing has achieved initial success in cracking down on crimes since April,

when China started a "strike hard" campaign, Saturday's China Daily said.

A recent survey indicated that most people are satisfied with the results of the "strike-hard" campaign, with 89.8 percent of those questioned saying security conditions in their communities

have improved, said an official with the Beijing municipal people's congress.

From April to the end of September, the crackdown has resulted in the solving of 27,951 criminal cases, including 161 homicides and 2,394 robberies, said Ren Dianhua, secretary-general of the

Beijing Municipal Government, at Friday's session of the Standing Committee of the 11th Beijing Municipal People's Congress.

More than 21,300 criminal suspects have been arrested, including 12,556 people who migrated here and 1,100 runaways who have hidden for a period of time or even years.

The paper quoted Ren as saying that Beijing Municipal Government makes fighting crime and maintaining law and order a priority to ensure a sound environment for living and business.
