A large number of people from all over China visited the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall Wednesday to commemorate the 108th anniversary of the late leader's birth.

Braving cold wind, many people lined up outside the hall at dawn, eager to pay their respects to the remains of Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China.

Zhang Cuiyun, a woman in her forties from Hengyang of Hunan Province, central China, said she sees Chairman Mao as her parent, and paying her respects to his remains on the anniversary of his birth is what she should do.

Like Zhang, many visitors came from distant provinces. Li Yida, a teacher from Shenzhen in Guangdong Province, said he has collected thousands of books on Mao, and hopes to write one himself.

The memorial hall has had 128 million visitors since it was opened on September 9, 1977.
