Construction of a subway in Shenzhen, a boomtown facing Hong Kong across a local river, is being carried out swiftly in an aim to prepare the line for trial operation in 2004.
Sources from Shenzhen Subway Company said that 2.3 billion yuan (about 277 million U.S. dollars) has been spent on construction of the subway this year.
In an interview with Xinhua Sunday, an official with the company claimed that foundation has been laid and the subway will be ready for a test run by late 2004.
The first phase of the subway project in Shenzhen, the vanguard city in China's reform and opening-up drive, in south China's Guangdong Province, is about 21.5 kilometers long and is estimated to cost 11.5 billion yuan (about 1.39 billion U.S. dollars), according to the official.
Chinese workers started work on the project early this year.
Subway service is now available in China only in cities of Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.
