The Beijing Municipal Higher People's Court is now considering replacing firing squads with lethal injections when carrying out the death penalty.

A court official said that a lethal injection is a more civilized method of execution and an injection room will be constructed in line with the principles of being safe, lawful, civilized and scientific.

"Details are now being planned and prepared," he said.

Execution is the most serious penalty handed out by Chinese laws. As huge changes are now taking place in Chinese society, themethod of execution should also be changed accordingly, experts say.

Sources say that government departments concerned have been researching the subject of execution in recent years. Some courts in China, including some based in Beijing, have tried lethal injections and accumulated valuable experience.
