The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, the first China-designed bridge on its longest river, will undergo the first major overhaul since it was built more than three decades ago.

The feasibility and scheme of the overhaul will start soon, said Mao Limin, office director of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge Administration.

The overhaul has been put on agenda for several times but has to be delayed due to the irreplaceable role of the bridge in cross-Yangtze traffic, he said.

The inauguration of the second Yangtze River bridge in Nanjing last March has finally made the overhaul possible.

Built in 1968, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge has a double layer structure. The upper layer for highway traffic measures 4,589 meters long and 15 meters wide, while the lower layer for railway traffic measures 6,772 meters long and 14 meters wide.

The bridge has been one of the longest in China and a landmark building in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province for a long time. It was hailed an engineering miracle upon its completion.
