Public prosecutors in Wenzhou,a medium-sized city in east China's Zhejiang Province, have recently ended their probe into a 13 million yuan police corruption case.

The prosecutors said they are now ready to charge Wang Tianyi, 52, former head of the police bureau of Lucheng district of the city, with taking bribes and being in unaccountable possession of a large sum of money in various currencies.

The prosecutors have reported finding 2.42 million yuan worth of property and cash, as well as 15,000 U.S. dollars in cash takenby Wang in bribes.

Most of the property is in the form of antiques and paintings, the value of which has been confirmed by art experts in Shanghai and Guangzhou, the prosecutors said.

The prosecutors described Wang as a fanatic collector of antiques and paintings. All the collections were kept by Wang in aluxury apartment he had bought. The collections in the apartment are sufficient to open a private museum, according to well-informed sources.

Wang was found in possession of 6.9 million yuan, 376,821 U.S. dollars, 291,774 Francs, 53,678 Hong Kong dollars, 49,997 Deutsch marks and 110,780 guilders, none of which he could account for, the prosecutors said.

Wang was arrested in September 2000, five months after he escaped after being contacted by the discipline department of the local party authority.

It has taken the prosecutors more than one year to investigate and sort out the evidence.

About 10 other suspects were also arrested in the same case.
