World Symposium on Human Genome to be Held in Shanghai

East China's Shanghai Municipality is preparing for the seventh International Human Genome Conference, which is scheduled between April 14 and 17 and will be attended by over 700 local and overseas experts and scholars. On the conference, unresolved issues like the relation between human genes and diseases, genetic study and evolution, ethics and legal issues would be discussed.

In east China's Shanghai Municipality preparations are underway for the seventh International Human Genome Conference which will be attended by over 700 local and overseas experts and scholars.

Scheduled for between April 14 and 17, the conference will cover unresolved issues like the relation between human genes and diseases, genetic study and evolution, ethics and legal issues.

There will also be 15 panel discussions, six panel speeches andfour theme speeches. Their topics will cover genome diversity, cancer, pharmaceutical and rice genomes as well as functions of the genome and bio-information science.

"China has made outstanding achievements in the study of the human genome, which is why we chose Shanghai as the host city," said Xu Lizhi, a Canadian professor of Chinese origin from the Toronto University and the Chairman of the World Human Genome Organization which is to sponsor the Conference.

  • The Seventh International Human Genome Meeting, HGM2002, will be held at the Shanghai International Conference Centre from the 14 - 17 April 2002.
